A vasectomy is a simple, effective procedure that permanently prevents sperm from being included in the semen. It’s the most reliable form of contraception available for men.
Sperm are produced in the testes and carried through small tubes called the vas deferens to the seminal vesicles. During a vasectomy, these tubes are safely sealed to block sperm movement.
Most of the semen (about 98%) is made up of fluid from the prostate and seminal vesicles, so after a vasectomy, the semen looks and feels the same, just without sperm. Testosterone production and sexual function are completely unaffected, so sex drive, performance, and ejaculation remain unchanged.
A small amount of local anaesthetic is applied using a very fine needle; there are no injections into the testes or penis. A single tiny opening (just 2 – 4 mm) is made in the centre of the scrotum below the penis using the unique Dr Snip no-scalpel Micro Keyhole technique. The area heals quickly without the need for stitches.
The vasa (tubes) are gently drawn through this tiny opening one at a time. Each is divided and sealed at the top using a dissolving thread or tiny clip to prevent rejoining, while the lower end remains open to minimise post-operative pressure and discomfort.
This Micro Keyhole open-ended technique reduces pain and complications and allows a faster recovery compared to traditional vasectomies, which require cutting the skin and blood vessels and often involve a general anaesthetic.
